Clare of Assisi was influenced by St. Francis of Assisi, as her parents wished, and fled to the Porziuncola Chapel. On March 18, 1212, Francis received her vows, and thus began the Second Order of St. Francis. Many joined Clare, including her mother and her sister St. Agnes of Assisi, and soon the Poor Clares were housed in the church and convent of San Damiano. Clare became abbess there in 1216. Clare wrote the Rule of Life, the first set of monastic guidelines known to have been written by a woman. Following her death, the order she founded was renamed in her honor as the Order of Saint Clare, commonly referred to today as the Poor Clares. In 1958 Pope Pius XII declared her patron of television, citing an incident during her last illness when she miraculously heard and saw the Christmas midnight mass in the basilica of San Francesco on the far side of Assisi."
